ChatGPT Search
ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's web-connected mode inside ChatGPT. It returns conversational answers grounded in live web results, with inline citations.
ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's web-connected search experience built into ChatGPT. When a user's question benefits from current information, ChatGPT retrieves live web results, synthesises an answer with the underlying language model, and shows inline citations linking back to the original sources. It is the production version of what OpenAI previewed as SearchGPT.
How ChatGPT Search works
ChatGPT Search is a retrieval-augmented system. A query classifier decides whether a turn needs fresh information; if so, ChatGPT issues web queries through OpenAI's search infrastructure, fetches the highest-ranked pages, and grounds the model's response on the retrieved content. Sources are shown as numbered citations and as a side panel of links.
OpenAI partners with publishers and uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to build the index. Sites can opt in or out independently of GPTBot, which is the crawler used for model training.
ChatGPT Search vs. classic ChatGPT
| Capability | Classic ChatGPT | ChatGPT Search |
|---|---|---|
| Information source | Model training data + memory | Live web index |
| Recency | Bound by training cutoff | Up-to-the-minute |
| Citations | Rare, often missing | Inline, linked, multiple sources |
| Hallucination risk | Higher | Lower — grounded in retrieved text |
Why it matters for brands
ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of weekly active users. When Search is invoked, the cited sources receive direct attention — and in many cases referral traffic. Being a cited source for queries in your category is the AI-era equivalent of ranking on page one of Google for the same term.
Critically, ChatGPT Search does not always pick the same sources as Google. Different retrieval ranking, different freshness weighting and different publisher partnerships mean a brand can be invisible in one and prominent in the other.
How to be cited in ChatGPT Search
- Allow OAI-SearchBot. Confirm
OAI-SearchBotis not blocked in robots.txt. Blocking it removes you from the index entirely. - Publish self-contained, declarative answers. Lead with the answer, then expand. ChatGPT Search prefers passages that read like clean reference material.
- Maintain freshness. Update high-value pages and use accurate
datePublished/dateModifiedvalues. Recency is a meaningful ranking factor. - Build topical depth. Sites with multiple related pages on a topic are more likely to be retrieved and cited than thin one-off pages.
- Earn brand mentions in trusted sources. Citations on industry publications and review platforms strengthen the authority signals OpenAI's ranking uses.
Measuring ChatGPT Search visibility
OpenAI does not publish a public dashboard. To measure visibility you need to run a representative set of category prompts against ChatGPT on a recurring basis, capture which sources are cited, and track your AI share of voice over time. Bot Analytics tools also let you measure how often OAI-SearchBot requests your pages — a leading indicator of inclusion.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Search the same as SearchGPT?
SearchGPT was the prototype name. The capability now ships as ChatGPT Search inside the standard ChatGPT product.
Does blocking GPTBot affect ChatGPT Search?
No. GPTBot is for model training. OAI-SearchBot is for the search index. They are independent and must be allowed or blocked separately.
Do citations send referral traffic?
Yes. Cited links are clickable and analytics platforms see referral visits attributed to chatgpt.com. Volume varies by query type, but high-intent commercial queries can drive measurable conversions.

Google AI Overviews (AIO)
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that sit above the blue links, stitched together from multiple sources directly inside Google Search.
Perplexity AI
Perplexity AI is a citation-first answer engine. Every query pulls live web sources, and the synthesised answer carries inline references back to them.
What Are AI Crawlers?
AI crawlers are bots run by AI vendors. Some fetch pages to train models, others fetch pages live to power answers inside AI search products.
What Is an AI Search Engine?
AI search engines synthesise an answer instead of returning a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are the most-used examples.
What Is Citation Ranking?
Citation ranking is the order in which an AI model lists its sources. Higher rank means more credit, more visibility, and usually more clicks.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization is the work of becoming the cited source inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, not just a blue link on Google.
Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)
Retrieval Augmented Generation lets an AI model fetch fresh information before it answers, instead of relying only on what it learned during training.
