    ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's web-connected search experience built into ChatGPT. When a user's question benefits from current information, ChatGPT retrieves live web results, synthesises an answer with the underlying language model, and shows inline citations linking back to the original sources. It is the production version of what OpenAI previewed as SearchGPT.

    How ChatGPT Search works

    ChatGPT Search is a retrieval-augmented system. A query classifier decides whether a turn needs fresh information; if so, ChatGPT issues web queries through OpenAI's search infrastructure, fetches the highest-ranked pages, and grounds the model's response on the retrieved content. Sources are shown as numbered citations and as a side panel of links.

    OpenAI partners with publishers and uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to build the index. Sites can opt in or out independently of GPTBot, which is the crawler used for model training.

    Why it matters for brands

    ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of weekly active users. When Search is invoked, the cited sources receive direct attention — and in many cases referral traffic. Being a cited source for queries in your category is the AI-era equivalent of ranking on page one of Google for the same term.

    Critically, ChatGPT Search does not always pick the same sources as Google. Different retrieval ranking, different freshness weighting and different publisher partnerships mean a brand can be invisible in one and prominent in the other.

    • Maintain freshness. Update high-value pages and use accurate datePublished / dateModified values. Recency is a meaningful ranking factor.
    • Build topical depth. Sites with multiple related pages on a topic are more likely to be retrieved and cited than thin one-off pages.
    • Earn brand mentions in trusted sources. Citations on industry publications and review platforms strengthen the authority signals OpenAI's ranking uses.

    Measuring ChatGPT Search visibility

    OpenAI does not publish a public dashboard. To measure visibility you need to run a representative set of category prompts against ChatGPT on a recurring basis, capture which sources are cited, and track your AI share of voice over time.
