AI Share of Voice measures how often a brand shows up in AI-generated answers compared to its competitors, across a defined set of category prompts.

AI Share of Voice (AI SOV) measures how often a brand is mentioned in AI-generated answers compared to its competitors, across a defined set of category-relevant prompts. It is the AI-era counterpart to traditional SEO share of voice — but instead of measuring ranking positions on a SERP, it measures presence inside the answer itself.

    How AI SOV is calculated

    The basic formula is simple:

AI SOV = (Your brand mentions / Total competitor mentions) across tracked prompts

The complexity is in the inputs. A meaningful AI SOV measurement requires a curated prompt set that mirrors how real buyers ask questions in your category, run on a recurring schedule across the AI engines that matter for your audience.

    Why AI SOV matters

In categories where AI answers are taking the place of the click-through, the brand cited in the answer wins the consideration set. AI SOV is the earliest credible measure of that dynamic. A rising AI SOV indicates that your AEO investment is compounding; a falling one indicates a competitor is being chosen as the canonical source for prompts that previously surfaced you.

    How to improve AI SOV

    • Audit which prompts you lose. Identify the queries where a competitor is mentioned and you are not. They reveal content gaps.
    • Build topical depth. Cluster content around the queries that matter, not isolated keyword pages.
    • Earn external citations. Mentions in independent industry sources strongly influence which brands AI engines name.
    • Fix your structured data. Clean Organization and Product schema reduce the chance of being misnamed or omitted.
    • Monitor weekly. AI engines update frequently. A monthly cadence misses meaningful shifts.

    Frequently asked questions

Is AI SOV the same as citation count?

Citations are one input — being linked as a source. AI SOV more broadly tracks any brand mention in the answer, including unsourced descriptive references.

How many prompts do I need to track?

Aim for 50 at minimum to get statistically meaningful weekly readings, and 200+ if your category is broad.

Can I track AI SOV manually?

For a handful of prompts, yes. At any meaningful scale you need a tool that prompts engines on a schedule and parses brand mentions consistently.
