Perplexity AI is a citation-first answer engine. Every query pulls live web sources, and the synthesised answer carries inline references back to them.

Perplexity AI is a web-connected AI answer engine that treats citation as a first-class output. For every query, Perplexity retrieves a set of live web pages, synthesises a concise answer with a large language model, and surfaces the underlying sources inline. It is one of the most influential platforms in the emerging AEO conversation because, more than any major competitor, it is built around the source list.

    How Perplexity works

Perplexity uses its own crawler — PerplexityBot — together with third-party search APIs to assemble a candidate set of pages for each query. A ranking layer selects the most relevant passages, and a generative model (Perplexity supports several, including its own Sonar models, GPT, Claude and Gemini) drafts a grounded answer with numbered citations. Follow-up questions are encouraged: each answer ends with related queries that extend the conversation.

    Why brands care about Perplexity

Perplexity's user base skews toward decision-makers — analysts, founders, technical buyers, journalists. Its citation-forward UI also means cited sources get more clicks per impression than equivalent placements on Google or ChatGPT. For B2B brands in particular, Perplexity citations are a high-quality, low-volume traffic source.

How to optimise for Perplexity citations

    • Allow PerplexityBot. Confirm it is not blocked in robots.txt. Many sites still block AI crawlers indiscriminately.
    • Publish primary research and original data. Perplexity disproportionately cites pages with unique numbers, frameworks and definitions rather than rewrites of common knowledge.
    • Use clean, scannable structure. Short paragraphs, descriptive subheads, and tables retrieve well as discrete chunks.
    • Keep timestamps honest. Recency is a strong factor on news-adjacent and fast-moving topics.
    • Earn external authority. Perplexity's ranker leans on the same external signals that drive traditional authority — quality backlinks and brand mentions in trusted publications.

    Measuring Perplexity visibility

Perplexity does not publish a publisher dashboard. Track visibility by running category-relevant prompts on a schedule and recording which domains are cited and in what position. Bot analytics also let you measure how often PerplexityBot visits your site — a leading indicator of being eligible for citation.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Perplexity train models on my content?

Perplexity has stated that crawled content is used for retrieval, not for training its proprietary Sonar models. Behaviour can change; review their published policy periodically.

Why does Perplexity sometimes cite weak sources?

The retrieval layer prioritises topical match and freshness alongside authority. Niche or low-authority pages can outrank big brands when they answer a specific long-tail query directly.

Can I get referral traffic from Perplexity?

Yes. Cited links are clickable, and analytics tools record the referrer as perplexity.ai. Volume is smaller than Google but conversion intent is typically higher.
