What Is People Also Ask (PAA)?

People Also Ask is the Google SERP feature that shows expandable related questions and loads more as users interact with it.

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google SERP feature that shows a stack of expandable, related questions with short answers. Click one and Google reveals a snippet-style answer pulled from a ranking page — and dynamically loads more questions, often expanding into a long chain. PAA boxes appear on the majority of informational queries and are one of Google's most trafficked SERP features.

    How PAA works

Google generates PAA questions algorithmically from related search queries, query reformulations and the structure of the top-ranking pages. When a user expands a question, Google selects a passage from a single ranking page and shows it inside the box, similar to a featured snippet but inline. Each interaction surfaces additional questions, encouraging the user to stay on the SERP rather than click out.

    Why PAA matters for AEO

    • Citation surface. Each expanded answer is attributed to a single source — winning that placement drives both visibility and clicks.
    • Query expansion intelligence. The PAA stack reveals adjacent questions Google associates with your target query — gold for content briefs.
    • AIO overlap. Pages cited inside PAA are often the same pages cited in AI Overviews on related queries.

    How to appear in PAA

    1. Use the question as a heading

Pages that appear in PAA almost always use the literal question text as an H2 or H3, followed immediately by a 40–60 word direct answer.

    2. Add FAQPage schema

Question/answer pairs marked up with FAQPage schema give Google explicit structured data to extract. Use sparingly and honestly — fabricated questions get filtered.

    3. Cover related questions on the same page

A page that answers ten related questions in clearly labelled sections is more eligible across the PAA stack than ten thin pages each answering one.

    4. Mirror the user's phrasing

"How do I…?" and "How to…" are different queries. Use the natural form a user would type.

    Using PAA for content research

Type your target query into Google, expand every PAA question, and harvest each newly loaded question. Within a few clicks you will have 30–50 user-validated subtopics — the foundation of a strong cluster of pillar and spoke content.

    Frequently asked questions

Is PAA the same as Featured Snippets?

Both extract a passage from a ranking page, but featured snippets sit above the organic results for the original query while PAA sits inside an expandable box answering related questions.

    Does PAA send traffic?

Yes — each expanded answer includes a clickable source link. PAA traffic is typically lower per impression than a top organic result but higher than a deep page-two ranking.

Can I influence which questions appear in PAA?

Not directly. Google generates the questions algorithmically. You influence what gets selected as the answer by structuring your content around those questions.
